Kids Don’t Come with Instructions!

By Jessica Fielding, NCADD Sacramento Prevention Team

Do you ever wish your child came with directions? My new bed came with more instructions then I will ever need – but none were available for the children in my life. The interesting fact is that children do so much more than any item I’ve ever purchased at IKEA. They run, they jump, they fall, they cry, they sing, and as they grow, they keep changing. As parents we want the best for our children, but in a time with growing kids and busy schedules we often struggle to find quality resources that enrich our families.

I am thrilled to announce that NCADD’s expansion of the Faith-Based Strengthening Families Program seeks to bridge that gap by offering a quality family program at different congregations throughout the year.

The Strengthening Families Program (SFP) is a nationally and internationally recognized parenting and family strengthening program for families who want to strengthen their family bonding and increase skills in order to create an environment where kids are less likely to engage in risky behaviors. SFP is an evidence-based family skills training program found to significantly reduce problem behaviors, delinquency, and alcohol and drug abuse in children and to improve social competencies and school performance of children ages 6-16. The program seeks to support families of faith in keeping their kids safe from risk, developing strong family and congregational ties, and learning how to integrate Christian principles in daily decision making. The program begins with a free family dinner, and continues with courses designed for parents, children, and teens.

On Monday, February 25th the first Faith Based site launched at Elevate Life Church in Sacramento with over 20 families and 80 participants.  Elevate Life Church is based out of South Sacramento and currently meets at James Rutter Jr. High School. Every Monday for the next 13 weeks, families from different areas of Sacramento will gather for dinner, learn new skills to strengthen their family, and participate in fun activities.
