NCADD- Sacramento Incorporates Canine Therapy Into Addiction Treatment Programs.

We’ve always known that a dog is Man’s Best Friend.  Now NCADD-Sacramento has introduced canine-assisted therapy to enhance the therapeutic environment at the agency.

These specially trained canines have the gift of clear, yet non-verbal communication to model for people who are struggling to understand their own inner experience.  They bring comfort and kindness into the room with them and offer unconditional love and support to adults and their family members. The children in the Family Groups and Playcare are particularly fond of visits from their furry friends.

Six members of the NCADD-Sacramento team recently took their prospective canine therapy dogs to obedience training.  The dogs represented a variety of sizes, breeds and temperaments.   Three successfully completed the program and two are ready to test for their Canine Good Citizen certificate.  Congratulations to Grady & Joey who accomplished this goal!

Once their certification is achieved, they advance to a higher level of training to become therapy dogs – perhaps as early as this spring.  We’ll keep you informed of their progress and look forward to having them join the NCADD-Sacramento team! In the meantime, dogs from Lend-A-Heart and the Delta Society will visit and interact with clients, staff and visitors.
