There are certain things that signify winter has arrived; chilly mornings, steaming cups of hot chocolate and warm fires. NCADD celebrated this holiday season with our Kernel families on a chilly December night.

It was with bittersweet hearts that we completed our final Kernel of the year as we celebrated our time spent together with an evening of ice skating. Our heartfelt thanks to the Downtown Sacramento Partnership for the donated admission and rental tickets for all families!  This perfect ending to an incredible year also signified an unforgettable start towards the New Year and a chance for the families to begin new memories with one another.

In 2013, with the help of Wakeland Properties and Another Choice/Another Chance, we were able to reach 232 participants with small “Kernels” of parenting information, designed to reap a harvest of family communication, strengthened relationships and support. We were reminded of this great quote by one of our parents: “To do better is to know better, ask the KERNELS! “ ~Clara Taylor.

Prevention works.

Families who learn and implement the tools to communicate, to express love and empathy, and to develop limits that are healthy and consistent, really DO have kids who are more likely to choose healthy behaviors into their adult years. And every parent can learn those tools.

As we embark on a new year, let’s take this opportunity to reflect on our family, celebrate the victories that we’ve had and resolve to work on our challenges. We at NCADD are here to support you! We have tools like our Families in Recovery classes and our Strengthening Families series as well as access to other services.

We believe in strong families, but we know that strong families take work, support and faith and that is what we hope for all of us in the coming year!
